The former club legend and the impending president has all but confirmed the club’s interest in the defender.

Bayern Munich director Oliver Kahn has said that the club would be silly not to take a serious interest in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Bayern’s CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had spoken previously about the clubs want to sign the French defender and Leipzig has all but confirmed the release clause the Bavarians will have to pay in order to sign him which is currently set at €42.5 million.

Set to become Bayern’s president in a year, Kahn has said the club is in talks with Upamecano to bring in the defender after it appears David Alaba will leave in the summer.

Kahn spoke on both situations.

“We’re losing David Alaba,” Kahn said.

“We made him an offer a while ago. He didn’t accept this offer.

“I also understand that a player like him, who’s been at Bayern Munich for a long time, is looking for a new challenge now.

“We have to think about who could be an adequate replacement for David.

“As a player, I’d love to have played with Ramos, but there’s nothing in [him coming to Bayern].”

Then attention turned to the RB Leipzig defender:

“He’s in demand across Europe.

“This season, he’s shown the quality that he has. Of course, we’re also in talks.

“He’s a player that lots of Europe’s biggest clubs want and Bayern are currently the most successful club in the world in sporting terms.

“We’re especially attractive for these types of players at the moment.”

With Alaba all but certain to leave and with Jerome Boateng’s future cloudy, there could be some big changes in Bayern’s defense throughout the next couple of windows.

Bayern is in action on Friday, when they travel to face Hertha Berlin.
