Juventus and Rennes are hoping to sign Hellas Verona defender Juan David Cabal ahead of Inter Milan this summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

23-year-old Verona defender Cabal looks to be Inter’s major target in defense this summer.

The Nerazzurri are aiming to bring the Colombian to reinforce the left side of their back three.

This is, essentially, part of a strategy to indirectly make up for the absence of Tajon Buchanan. The Canadian is recovering from a serious leg break and will miss several months at the start of next season.

With Buchanan out, Carlos Augusto will play primarily or exclusively as a wingback.

Therefore, the versatile Brazilian will hardly be available to play in the back three – where he frequently deputized last season.

As such, Inter are keen to sign a left-sided defender to fill that void.

Verona defender Cabal is the player Inter have identified to bolster their defensive options.

The Colombian is a player who the Nerazzurri see as having the exact profile to play in Simone Inzaghi’s back three system.

Cabal has played at centre-back, although last season at Verona he mainly played at full-back.

The 23-year-old has proven capable of playing as an attacking left-back. But he still has the pace, physicality, and defensive attributes to contribute defensively.

Therefore, Inter expect that Cabal will be comfortable playing on both sides of the ball on the left of the back three.

Getting the right profile is important for Inter should they decide to go with a younger signing rather than moving for a proven veteran like Mario Hermoso or Ricardo Rodriguez.

However, Inter are not the only club to have taken note of Cabal, reports the Gazzetta.

The newspaper anticipate that the Nerazzurri’s Serie A rivals Juventus will also make an effort to sign the Colombian. As will Ligue 1 side Rennes.
