A record breaking strike from Cristiano Ronaldo and a late Álvaro Morata goal gave Juventus victory over Napoli the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday.

The first half was an evenly matched affair but the two sides went in goalless at half-time.

The opening goal finally came with 64 minutes on the clock. A corner from Juve’s Federico Bernardeschi came off Napoli’s Tiémoué Bakayoko before finding Ronaldo, who made no mistake from close range.

The goal was the 760th of Ronaldo’s career, taking him top of the all-time scoring charts.

Napoli then had a golden chance to equalise when Dries Mertens was brought down in the box by Weston McKennie and VAR awarded a penalty.

Lorenzo Insigne stepped up and sent goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny the wrong way, but his shot went wide of the post.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side went in search of a late equaliser but it never came, and Morata made it 2-0 deep into injury time to clinch the first trophy of Andrea Pirlo’s managerial career.
