Coach Xavi Hernandez’s possible departure at the end of the season has led Barcelona to keep their eyes peeled for alternatives in the market.

Before Xavi reversed his decision to resign, one of the options being considered by Barcelona was Thiago Motta, with the manager being tipped to succeed Xavi at the helm.

Recently, Motta has made history in Serie A by leading Bologna to the Champions League qualification. At 41, the Italian is an emerging coach with some degree of experience in Serie A and with PSG’s youth teams.

Now, interest in him is growing from elite European clubs, with Juventus most recently entering the fray.

Juventus’ interest will alert Barcelona

According to Calciomercato (h/t SPORT), Juventus have already offered Motta a two-year contract with an optional third year, along with a salary of €3.5 million per year.

Still, there are other teams interested in him besides Juventus. With high sporting ambitions, Bologna hopes to retain Motta and are convincing him to ignore external offers.

And to maintain their Champions League status, the team intends to invest €100 million to build one of the most competitive squads in Italian football, which would certainly appeal to the young manager.

Motta aware of Barcelona’s situation

Additionally, the report adds that Motta knows that Barcelona president Joan Laporta views him as a possible replacement for Xavi Hernandez, even though there has not been an official offer made yet.

Next week, Xavi’s destiny will be decided once and for all, and Motta is considered a solid candidate because of his ties to both Laporta and his former teammate Deco.

Other options like Hansi Flick, Thomas Tuchel and Rafa Marquez also remain in the running, so time will tell who the technical department chooses to replace Xavi with if his tenure at Barcelona comes to an end.
