Juventus are closing in on a deal to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres, reports Spanish outlet Sport.

The Spanish centre-back’s contract expires in 2024 and has no intention of renewing his deal with the club.

The Bianconeri have held two rounds of talks and are optimistic about persuading the Spaniard to move to the Allianz Stadium.

Torres has long been linked with a move to a top club having previously been the subject of a lucrative bid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021.

The Spaniard turned down the opportunity and pledged his future to Villarreal, who were due to play in the Champions League.

With the 26-year-old now planning for the next step of his career, Juve look to have won the race for his signature despite interest from several clubs.

Torres has been playing at the highest level for many years, making 169 appearances for the Yellow Submarine.

He was an integral part of the side that won the Europa League in 2020/21 and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League the following season.

Torres has made 30 appearances in La Liga this season, helping Quique Setien’s side close in on a European spot.

The Bianconeri are looking to bolster their defence in the summer, with Daniele Rugani and Leonardo Bonucci facing uncertain futures.

Both players have fallen down the pecking order this season, with Massimiliano Allegri preferring Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer and Danilo in the backline.

Torres will be a great addition to the Old Lady, and he is arguably among the best ball-playing centre-backs in Europe.

The Spaniard’s release clause was previously said to be around €55 million, but the actual fee could be cheaper.
