With Gianluigi Buffon likely to be hanging up his gloves in the summer, the time has come for Juventus to start identifying potential replacements for their legendary shot-stopper.

Wojciech Szczęsny’s impressive performances since joining from Arsenal in the summer means he has a good chance of starting next season as the Bianconeri’s number one goalkeeper, but the club will still need to sign an understudy for the Pole.

Top of the list is Espanyol’s Pau López. The 23-year-old Spaniard spent some time on loan at Tottenham Hotspur last season and is out of contract in the summer, although Juve could face competition from Serie A rivals Napoli for his signature.

Finally, Genoa stopper Mattia Perin is the other name in the frame. The 25-year-old has kept an impressive eight clean sheets in 20 Serie A games so far this season.

And speaking of Buffon, team-mate Andrea Barzagli has hinted that the 39-year-old could take on a role at the Italian football federation once his playing days come to an end.

“Gigi is our captain. For us it is fundamental that he is on the field and in the locker room,” Barzagli told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the future I can see him do well with a role in the FIGC. Having a former player like him for Italy would be an advantage for the whole movement.”
