The first legs of the Europa League semi-finals were on the docket Thursday evening.
Here is what went down in Turin and Rome.
Scorers: Gatti 97′ ; En-Nesyri 26′
Sevilla found no trouble getting on the ball at the home of the 36 time Italian champions, and found themselves with a free-kick in a dangerous position in the opening 15 minutes.
However, Marcos Acuña’s tame ball into the box was nearly punished by Juve, as they quickly went the other way before Filip Kostić sent his effort narrowly wide of the post.
The La Liga outfit silenced the home crowd before the half-hour mark, taking the lead through Youssef En-Nesyri, who capped off a rip-roaring counterattack by tapping home from close range for his fourth strike in the competition.
A host of changes from Max Allegri brought more energy to the hosts in the early going of the second half.
Juventus pushed and pushed deep into stoppage time, and dramatically found the leveller in the 97th minute thanks to Federico Gatti, who headed home after a couple of flicked headers in the box to restore parity at the death and set up a tense second leg in Spain.
Scorers: Bove 63′
The Bundesliga outfit were on top from the get-go, and should have found themselves a goal ahead in the early going, but young talisman Florian Wirtz saw his shot from inside the box roll just wide of the post.
Roma should have struck home a goal of their own shortly after, but somehow Lukas Hradecky got a hand to Roger Ibañez’s point-blank header to deny the hosts their opener.
The two sides traded chances early on, but the game settled into a more cagey pattern as the half wore on.
Physicality was the name of the game after the break, as neither side could seem to piece together any quality attacking moves.
Finally, Roma broke through just past the hour mark, as youngster Edoardo Bove stabbed home from close range in just his third European appearance as a professional.
In typical fashion for a José Mourinho side, Roma held on to see out their lead in the face of the late Leverkusen pressure, ensuring the capital club would take a 1-0 lead to Germany for the second leg.
