AS Roma winger Justin Kluivert will not receive a work permit from the English FA to join Premier League newcomers Fulham FC.
The deal is now off, according to The Athletic. Fulham hoped to sign Kluivert before transfer deadline day, but they will now have to pursue other targets.
The Cottagers wanted Kluivert to replace new signing Manor Solomon, who is out with a long-term injury.
A deal was close. The Giallorossi wanted to send the Netherlands international on loan to England with an obligation to buy for around €10 million.
However, Kluivert was denied a work permit after his application. The 23-year-old’s ‘lack of recent appearances for Roma meant he failed to meet FA criteria and appeal was not allowed’.
Kluivert’s last appearance for the capital club was back in October 2020, a few days before he left to join RB Leipzig on a season-long loan. He also played 31 times on loan at OGC Nice last season.
Fulham will try hard to find a player they can bring in before the window closes tomorrow. There have been links to Olympique de Marseille outcast Bamba Dieng.
However, Everton are also in the race for the versatile 22-year-old attacker from Senegal, and that could complicate things.
Fulham want to sign Layvin Kurzawa from Paris Saint-Germain to provide left full-back competition for Antonee Robinson.
They are also close to completing the signing of former Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Willian. The Brazilian international has terminated his contract with Brasileiro Serie A club Corinthians.
With Kluivert considered surplus to requirements at Roma, he will have to secure a move to another club before the end of the window.
Jose Mourinho does not want him for the 2022/23 season, and he will try to leave before he finds himself stranded after deadline day.
