As Liverpool and Manchester City prepare to face off in the curtain-raising Community Shield tie later today, Jurgen Klopp has been urging encouraging his players.
Speaking ahead of the game, Klopp urged his players to use the pain of last season’s league disappointment to overcome the challenges of the new season.
He said (via Daily Mail): “The things we do are good. Can we do it better? Yes. Will that always lead to a better result? That is not possible because we won a lot of games, but performance-wise we can definitely improve, and that is what we try.
“We want to create a resilience and a fighting spirit. Being angry is important to fight against the outside world in this specific moment. All these things we can do. We don’t know where it will lead us, but we know it will improve us.”
The Klopp versus Pep Guardiola rivalry has been at the forefront of the Premier League over the past five seasons.
Despite Liverpool losing only two league games last season, they still missed out on the title.
During the 2018/19 season, it was the same story. Liverpool lost only one game all season but missed out on the title with one point.
Klopp has been urging his side to find their siege mentality, that ‘us against the world’ mentality, as they prepare for the new season.
The Reds can make a statement with a win against City today at the King Power Stadium. Klopp will hope they can start the season they mean to go on.
Liverpool will start their Premier League campaign against Fulham on August 6, while City will face West Ham United the following day.
