Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that Joe Gomez has started his rehabilitation following successful surgery on his knee earlier this month.

Klopp says that it a tough situation for Gomez to be in but that he is with his family and they are helping to ease the pain he must be feeling at the moment. The German coach says that Gomez could have been feeling lonely after suffering the knock and being around his family is the best place for him to be right now.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website, Klopp gave a little update on where Gomez is at in his recovery. “[It is] a tough one but the surgery was successful, so he is now already recovering first from the surgery and then starting the rehabilitation.

“He is with his family, so he is in the best possible place I would say. That’s it, pretty much. Rehab has started now. After surgery you count from that moment backwards and we help as much as we can, but for the first few days all of the boys after surgery probably feel pretty alone. But when you have your family around – and that’s the case for him – then it’s as good as possible, that’s it.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

It is a good sign that Gomez had a successful surgery and has already started the rehab process, as it means that there have been no setbacks so far for the defender. If the surgery caused more complications then it could have meant that Gomez was out for longer than he was expected to be. Although no official date/month has been given for his return, Liverpool’s statement when the injury news first broke said that he is set to miss the majority of the season.

As Klopp says, it is good that Gomez has his family around him at this time. Mental health is a serious issue and suffering such a brutal injury to potentially end his season could have had a significant impact on him. This is why it is so key to have people around you to help you through difficult times and that is what Gomez seems to have with his family – along with everyone at Liverpool as well.

Hopefully, the rehab goes well and Gomez can get back out on the pitch before the end of the season. With the European Championships next summer, Gomez has a potential target to aim for to make sure that he is in contention to be named in the squad when it comes around.
