Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Thiago Alcantara is still being assessed ahead of the Champions League clash with Ajax on Wednesday.

Klopp says that Thiago’s injury is nowhere near as serious as Virgil van Dijk’s is, with the Dutchman potentially out for the rest of the season after damaging his ACL.

Thiago played the full 90 minutes against Everton but was the subject of a terrible challenge by Richarlison – resulting in a straight red card for the Toffees forward.

When asked about Thiago’s situation, Klopp gave an update to Liverpool’s website. “So, yes, he got a knock, a proper knock.

“All the rest, we have to see. It’s not even close to being as serious [as Virgil van Dijk]. But will he be ready for Wednesday? I don’t know yet. We will see.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

After Thiago’s impressive performance against Everton, having him fit for Ajax – or the weekend – could be huge for Liverpool. The Spanish international, on his full debut, was exceptional in the middle of the park.

Thiago was active at both ends as he broke up attacks to win the ball back as well as providing key passes offensively to create chances. He made two interceptions and one tackle, whilst also producing two key passes and completing four dribbles against Everton players. This shows how influential he can be in both boxes and how he could possibly add some balance to Liverpool’s midfield with his box-to-box play.

So, hopefully, Klopp is right and the injury is not as serious as Van Dijk’s and Thiago can be back as quickly as possible. It could be worth resting him for the Ajax clash just to make sure he does not aggravate the injury immediately, giving him a bit more time to recover ahead of their next Premier League match.
