Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes the injury centre-back Dejan Lovren sustained during the Reds’ 3-0 victory against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday is not too serious.

Lovren was substituted before half-time for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after he felt a niggle. The Croatian international was keen to play through the injury, but Klopp did not allow him to do so.

“Always you don’t know exactly but it looks not too serious, it looks like a little cramp. He felt something, he told us, said he for sure could go to half-time, wanted to have treatment there and carry on, but we said no and stopped it there,” said Klopp at his post-game press conference.

“That’s the status quo, you have these kind of things in this moment of the season. It is similar to what Gini and Adam Lallana had – not serious but serious enough to keep them out.

“Now we have two days to make sure they can go again. That’s what I think at the moment but I don’t know 100 per cent.”

Despite the fact Klopp believes the injury is not too serious, it is a blow for his side, as the Reds are currently without centre-back Joel Matip and midfielder Fabinho.

Defender Joe Gomez appears to be the likely option to partner centre-back Virgil van Dijk until both Matip and Lovren recover.

The win against Bournemouth puts Liverpool 11 points clear of second-placed Leicester City. However, the Foxes are yet to play, as they travel to Villa Park this afternoon.

Manchester United handed Manchester City a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, which further enhanced Liverpool’s chances of claiming the Premier League title come May.
