Klopp critiqued the team’s approach to defending set-pieces, a known strength of Everton: “In the end, the player is anyway completely free. I didn’t see it back but I’m pretty sure we could have defended that better.”

Acknowledging the fans’ expectations and his previous record in derbies, Klopp offered an apology: “I really feel for the people, I’m really sorry for that obviously… I really apologise for that, it was unnecessary but it happened.”

If you win a game then the mental turnaround is obviously not a massive problem, but we have now both things to do,” he admitted, already preparing for the next challenge.
