Liverpool also held up their end of the bargain on the final day, beating Wolves 3-1 at Anfield after also going behind.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Klopp was quick to praise Man City for the way in which they had won the title.

"Congratulations to Man City, Pep Guardiola, the players, the staff and all of the supporters," he said.

"It was a tough race, a tight race, we made it exciting, but you [City] ended it one point ahead and that makes you champions - it's well deserved. You fought hard today, we fought hard today in game was not the pinnacle of our skillset.

"The start was not cool and it gave us a proper knock, you could see that, and Wolves had a good game plan so we had to dig in deep, and we did. We turned the game, we won it, but in the end we finished in second place which is obviously really good but also disappointing as well.

When ask about Liverpool's performance on the day, Klopp added: "There was a lot at stake today and we are all human beings.

"These boys played an insane season and in this game today, where everything came together and the opponent was really going for it and scores an early goal, we had a lot to go against. It mirrors our season. If you are only winning the games when you're really flying then you get 30 points and you say goodbye [to the Premier League], but these boys won a lot of other games as well, and today again.

"I am very proud of this group, I am very proud of the club and how we came out of the pandemic with the atmospheres we created home and away."
