Jullien to Schalke story takes another twist

So, is it on or is it off? Well in the case of the Chris Jullien to Schalke story it seems there may still be life in the deal to take our out of favour centre half from the Scottish Premiership to the Bundesliga.

It was reported yesterday that an agreement couldn’t be reached between Jullien’s representatives and the German club, despite the player apparently coming through a stringent medical, and that Jullien had flown back to Glasgow.

Now according to French journalist Marc Mechenoua, there remains a chance that deal could still go through.

Jullien has a tough choice to make. If this deal is still a possibility, then surely a compromise on the finances can be reached.

With all due respect to the player, the offer of a chance to play in the Bundesliga, particularly after being out of first team football for so long, is not an offer to be dismissed lightly, even if it does mean realigning your financial expectations somewhat.

It is clear Jullien does not have a future at Celtic under Ange Postecoglou, and chances are it was that way long before the player went public regarding his grievances over playing time and which players were being played ahead of him. And as much as it was encouraging to hear the player had initially intended to stay and fight for his place, the chances are Jullien was facing an uphill task to do so.

Should the Schalke deal be on, then it has to be one worth considering as possibly the best the player is likely to get. It will be at a well-supported club, in a very competitive league and despite being a place where on and off-field problems have been a recent concern, the relegation season was rock-bottom for Schalke, now the only way is up.

There are other clubs who have been claimed to have noted interest in Chris Jullien, with French League 1 sides Rennes and Lorient both credited with an interest in the player, but even if it is a return to France that may be the attraction for Jullien, neither of those clubs have turned interest into an offer like Schalke have. That in itself is worth further consideration.

Jullien has been a good player for Celtic, he’s given us some fantastic moments both in Europe and domestically, but the truth is the relationship has run its course.

One party has made their position crystal clear by accepting an offer from Schalke, it may be best the other party now does the same.
