With manager Philippe Clement having been dismissed after the club failed to qualify for Europe altogether this past season, Monaco’s search for a new manager has begun.

While both former Leeds coach Jesse Marsch and RB Salzburg’s Matthias Jaissle have been linked with the now-vacant position, another candidate, closer to home, has thrown his hat into the ring.

Speaking as a guest on RMC Sport, former Rennes and Strasbourg manager Julien Stéphan has indicated that he would be interested in joining the Principality club.

The former midfielder was sacked midway through last season by the Alsatians while they were lying second-to-bottom, although he did lead them to an unexpected 6th-place finish the previous campaign.

Now, Stéphan says, he has recovered from the setback and is ready to return to a dugout in time for the start of next season. The 42-year-old explains that he would like to take on a club that would be fighting for the upper reaches of the Ligue 1 table, and is waiting for the right offer to come – “[A good project] would be one that’s ambitious, to play in the highest third of the standings. But there can also be interesting projects in both personal and emotional terms. I’m open-minded, honestly.”
