The 23-year-old German international was indispensable in his first season at BVB. He was the crucial midfield hub in Thomas Tuchel’s ball-oriented system. But since then, Weigl struggled to recreate his break-out year with playing time dwindling.
Weigl only made 18 Bundesliga appearances in the last campaign under Lucien Favre, who preferred the seasoned and more physical Axel Witsel next to Thomas Delaney in central midfield.
Despite his contract being dated to 2021, the midfielder would like to search for greener pastures elsewhere according to Bild. But so far no club has met BVB’s asking price of €30m.
The tabloid writes that the Black and Yellows are confident to offload Andre Schürrle, Shinji Kagawa, Sebastian Rode, Maximilian Philipp and Weigl before the summer transfer window slams shut.
In Episode 283, we discussed how Weigl’s role might gain importance in BVB’s midfield with the addition of Mats Hummels. Especially, a partnership between Weigl and Brandt in midfield would make sense against more defensive-minded teams but it appears that he will try to reinvigorate his career elsewhere.
If Weigl leaves, it will be interesting to see whether the club trusts Tobias Raschl enough to take the spot or if they will look for a replacement.
