Ahead of the home tournament in 2006, there was no expectation from Germany’s team. However, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side was moments away from reaching a World Cup final. It was Italy that stopped them in a memorable semi-final at the iconic Westfalenstadion.
"I remember 2006. I'm still not happy that Germany didn't win,” reflects Julian Nagelsmann when the topic shifted to Italy’s previous trip to Dortmund. “But, for me, it's more important to talk about the present and not the past. We want to write our own history. I'm not afraid. We have good solutions for tomorrow. I hope we win the game."
Germany boosted their chances of reaching the UEFA Nations League semi-final with a comeback win in Milan on Thursday. The return leg will be played in Dortmund tomorrow. Italy knocked out Germany in the same stadium through iconic extra-time goals from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero on their way to lifting the 2006 World Cup.
