Speaking to the DFB YouTube channel after the announcement of Germany’s squad for the October international break, head coach Julian Nagelsmann commented on the absence of Karim Adeyemi and the recall of Serge Gnabry.

Since the start of the season, Adeyemi has been in red-hot form, the winger has five goals and three assists for Dortmund and in the last international break scored five times for Germany’s under-21s. However, after scoring a hat-trick in the Champions League against Celtic, Adeyemi limped off with a muscular injury.

On why the winger was excluded from the squad, Nagelsmann said (via @iMiaSanMia):

“Karim Adeyemi got injured yesterday, but he’s been in great form and is certainly a candidate for us in the future. He’s currently a very important factor for the U21s in these important games. For us, he may not have had a starting role. Of course the players want to play for the senior team, but presenting yourself through good performances with the U21 is also recommendable for every player”

Similarly, Gnabry has also seen an upturn in his form after the arrival of Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich. Last season, the winger had to deal with appearances off of the bench and never really showed his quality, but under the Belgian, Gnabry is a starter and has repaid his faith with two goals and three assists in eight games.

This is the 29-year-old’s first appearance in the national team since November of last year, on recalling Gnabry, Nagelsamnn said:

“Serge had a tough year with a lot of injuries. He’s now managed to stabilize himself physically. Also from a performance point of view, he’s had many good games in pre-season and also during the start of the season in the Bundesliga and Champions League. He’s not exactly a new face with the national team, but he’s not been with us for a long time and unfortunately missed the Euros. We’re looking forward to having him back and being able to count on his qualities”
