Atletico Madrid look to be on the verge of a major coup, and their first big-money signing since Joao Felix. Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez has agreed to join the club on a five-year deal.

City and Atletico reached an agreement on a €75m fee plus €20m in variables for the 24-year-old on Tuesday morning, and after spending much of the day in negotiations with Alvarez’s agents, Los Rojiblancos look to have closed the deal.

There was talk of a difference of €2-3m between the parties earlier in the day, especially after Paris Saint-Germain made it clear that they would be willing to put up €10m per season for him. Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal has been done now though. Alvarez is now due to arrive in the Spanish capital next week.

At the same time as the Alvarez deal, Los Rojiblancos have been negotiating a move for Samu Omorodion to Chelsea. The 20-year-old will only leave the club if the Alvarez deal goes through, but the €45m fee they will receive for Omorodion is believed to be crucial for Atletico to fund the move. Alvarez would become their second-most expensive signing in their history after Felix, who cost €127m.
