Red Bull shocked the football world on Wednesday morning by announcing that Jürgen Klopp will become their Head of Global Soccer from 1st January 2025. But the news comes as ‘no surprise’ to Klopp’s former boss, Hans-Joachim Watzke.
Speaking to SID, via kicker, Borussia Dortmund CEO Watzke wished the former Dortmund and Liverpool coach well in his new role. “As always, I wish Jürgen luck in his new job,” said Watzke, who added that, “it was no surprise to me because we talked about it personally.”
Red Bull CEO of Projects and Investments and former RB Leipzig director, Oliver Mintzlaff was determined to bring Klopp to the organisation. The role is similar to that of Ralf Rangnick at the organisation before he left in 2020.
Klopp was Borussia Dortmund’s head coach from 2008 to 2015, and went on to win two Bundesliga titles and a DFB Pokal, as well as reaching the 2013 Champions League final.
With a move to Liverpool in 2015, Klopp would go on to lift the 2019/20 Premier League title, one season after winning the club’s sixth Champions League trophy.
