Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has revealed he personally told Philippe Coutinho to move to Bayern Munich this summer.

Coutinho joined Bayern on a season-long loan deal worth a reported €8.5m from Barcelona last month.

And former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp – who coached Coutinho at Liverpool – expects the Brazilian playmaker to go down a storm in the Bundesliga.

“Amazing player, we really didn’t want to let him go. Barça forced us financially,” the Reds boss told German outlet Bild regarding Coutinho’s January 2018 switch to Camp Nou.

“World class player, really good transfer for Bayern and the Bundesliga. I thought it was a good fit for both when I first heard about it.”

Klopp says Liverpool would definitely have been interested in signing the 27-year-old back but he was out of their price-range.

“It may sound strange, but we didn’t have enough money to get him. We’d already spent all the money we got for him,” he added.

“I have already told him in person that he and Bayern will be a good fit.”

Bayern will be hoping the acquisition of Coutinho will help them secure an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title in the coming campaign, but Klopp is hoping his former club Dortmund can shake things up in Germany’s top flight.

“It’s not so good for Dortmund, I hope Dortmund will win the title again because it’s getting boring with Bayern winning every year.” he said.

“But Dortmund have an amazing team. Other teams like Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig are also interesting teams and a lot can happen.”
