Summer signing Shaqiri played his first full 90 minutes in a Liverpool shirt in the game at Anfield and afterwards, the Swiss international was engaged in an animated tête-à-tête with his manager on the pitch.
Many people speculated that Klopp was angry at the former Stoke City man for missing a great chance to seal the victory for Liverpool when they were leading 1-0, but the German says that was not the case.
“Oh no. No, I spoke about a free-kick, the last one,” said Klopp.
“We wanted to have Mo [Salah] a bit wider, so pass the ball to Mo. The whole bunch of players was in one direction where we shot the ball then actually, and if he can send Mo in a one-on-one situation in the last situation of the game it would have been not too bad.
“But the boys, maybe it was too loud in the stadium they didn’t hear me anymore. It doesn’t make too much sense. What I said there was only about the free-kick nothing else.”
Klopp and Shaqiri’s heated debate came on the same day José Mourinho was caught on camera having words with Paul Pogba on Manchester United’s training ground.
But it seems that incident was little more than a storm in a tea cup as well.
