Manchester United and Olympique Lyonnais have it all to play for in next week’s quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford.

A four-goal thriller at the Groupama Stadium culminated with Ruben Amorim’s men in despair after Rayan Cherki tapped in a last-gasp equaliser to bring the scoring to 2-2.

Joshua Zirkzee thought he’d done enough to seal a first-legged win when he headed home in the 88th minute, before sloppiness at the the back and yet another goalkeeping howler from Andre Onana squandered United’s advantage.

Indeed, Zirkzee’s late contribution likely had Onana thinking he’d have his blushes spared following a dismal first-half error when conceding Thiago Almada’s free-kick, and yet, he’ll depart France knowing his performance was again detrimental to the side’s result.

Three Erik ten Hag signings have failed miserably at United

The Cameroonian was singled out post-match by The Athletic journalist Colin Millar – as were two other Erik ten Hag signings in the form of Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, all of whom have proven excruciatingly underwhelming since their big-money moves in 2023.

“Andre Onana has been a liability for Manchester United. Error-prone on and off the pitch. This week has been a microcosm of his two seasons at the club. The 2023 summer transfer window of spending £160million+ on Onana, Mount, Hojlund an all-timer horror show of recruitment,” Millar said on X/Twitter.

Mount has just returned from his most recent injury layoff with off-the-bench cameos in the last three games. He has made just 35 appearances for United in total over the last two seasons, including only 14 starts.

As for Hojlund, the £72m forward has endured a lacklustre campaign in front of goal, with his record of a mere eight goals in 42 matches prompting INEOS chiefs to invest heavily in a new centre-forward when the window opens.
