Journo: Wilfried Zaha’s contract situation at Crystal Palace will entice Tottenham Hotspur

Wilfried Zaha has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur in virtually every transfer window during his time at Crystal Palace, but no move has materialised.

That is according to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, who claims that the 29-year-old’s contract situation at Selhurst Park could finally convince Spurs to get a deal over the line for him.

Answering in a Q&A session, Gold wrote:

“Zaha has been linked with Spurs in every transfer window but it’s never been a deal that’s seemingly ever come close to becoming reality. His contract situation will make him attractive for Tottenham with just six months remaining…”

Zaha is set to enter the last six months of his contract at Crystal Palace. With the level of experience, versatility and ability he has, one can expect teams to line up for his services if he doesn’t renew his deal with the Eagles.

However, he is approaching 30 and that could deter Tottenham. Gold recognises this fact but also cites Ivan Perisic as an example, who is 33 and was signed this summer on a free transfer from Inter Milan.

“…but at 30-years-old he’s edging away from being the usual profile of signing they’d go for, especially with the contract he would require. Ivan Perisic did break away from that mould which means you can never say never, but when it comes to Premier League free transfers foreign clubs often hold the advantage because they can speak to players from January.”

That’s a good point. If there is interest in the former Manchester United winger from foreign teams, then it could complicate matters for Spurs. Zaha is a brilliant profile to add to our ranks.

He may be 29 but that brings with it a lot of experience. He can play across the entire frontline – similar to Son Heung-min and Richarlison.

With 443 games under his belt for the London outfit under his belt across competitions, he is one of the most proven forwards right now in the Premier League. 2023 could be the time when Zaha tries to move to greener pastures.

It seems that the move to Manchester United came too early for him in his career and he stuck with Palace for the rest of his playing days so far for stability. He is now established and reaching an age where joining a team like Tottenham could be the best way to test his ability and pedigree – even if it entails competition for playing time.
