Journalist Andrea Longoni believes that AC Milan risk ‘going backwards’ if they allow Ismael Bennacer or Rafael Leao to leave by not paying them what they want.

Milan have managed to complete nine important renewals in 2022 so far with Theo Hernandez, Matteo Gabbia, Tommaso Pobega, Rade Krunic, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Stefano Pioli, Sandro Tonali, Fikayo Tomori and most recently Pierre Kalulu having all extended their deals.

However, a lot has been written about how difficult it will be to extend Bennacer and Leao’s deals. The former has just changed agent and appears to want a big pay rise to stay, while the latter also wants a pay hike and there is also the issue of the fine owed to Sporting CP.

Andrea Longoni has written a column for MilanNews in which he touches upon the importance of following the key renewals that have already happened this year by tying down two more crucial players.

“The renewals of Theo Hernandez, Tomori, Tonali, Kalulu and the others are very important, but now comes the real double exam: the one linked to the future of Bennacer and Leao,” he began.

“After years, sporting credibility has been regained at the highest levels, which also attracts important players. Significant and not easy steps forward have been made: raising salaries is next, to avoid going backwards and ruining the natural ambitions of a great team.”
