Cody Gakpo on Bayern Munich’s Radar: Should Liverpool Fans Be Worried?

After a strong campaign at Liverpool, Cody Gakpo’s name is now swirling in the rumour mill, with Bayern Munich emerging as a potential suitor. As revealed by Sky Germany’s reputable journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has earmarked the Dutchman as a serious option to address their longstanding issue on the left wing.

“Gakpo has been informed about Bayern’s interest – Max Eberl is maintaining contact. Nothing more at this stage,” Plettenberg shared on X.

It’s no surprise Gakpo has caught the eye. With 18 goals and 6 assists in 49 appearances during the 2024–25 season, he proved to be a key figure in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign under Arne Slot, despite injury setbacks in the latter stages. The forward’s consistent productivity and versatility are qualities any top European club would desire.

Why Bayern Are Pushing for Gakpo

The Bavarians’ pursuit of Gakpo appears driven by two factors: their failure to land Florian Wirtz and the need to reinforce their left flank. After Liverpool swooped in with a €100+ million bid for Wirtz — thanks in part to Slot’s personal intervention — Bayern were left scrambling for alternatives.

According to Plettenberg, Bayern have now “shifted focus entirely to securing a high-caliber left winger”, and Gakpo’s name features prominently alongside Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and AC Milan’s Rafael Leão.

The German giants are preparing for Vincent Kompany’s first full season at the helm, aiming to inject fresh energy into an ageing attack still reliant on veterans like Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman.

Could Liverpool Really Sell?

While Gakpo is not actively pushing for an exit, Plettenberg’s update suggests a move could materialise under the right conditions. “Regardless of FC Bayern’s interest, a summer departure for Cody #Gakpo is possible if the right offer comes in. Several enquiries have already been made,” he wrote.

Critically, Bayern are one of only three clubs Gakpo would consider leaving Liverpool for. This doesn’t mean a move is imminent, but it signals potential vulnerability in Liverpool’s ranks as they weigh up the future of not only Gakpo but also Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez.

Given Gakpo’s current trajectory, any sale would require a premium. Signed for £37 million (rising to £44 million) in 2023, Liverpool would expect a substantial markup to part with a player they’ve helped develop over two pivotal seasons.

Liverpool’s Dilemma: Depth vs Value

Liverpool now face a familiar modern conundrum: protecting squad depth while managing financial sustainability. With the summer window fast approaching, the club must tread carefully. Losing a player like Gakpo — who offers flexibility, elite output and Champions League pedigree — could weaken the squad unless a significant upgrade or windfall is secured.

But with Arne Slot’s recent success and Liverpool’s growing pull in the European market, this may be more of a strategic test than a threat. Slot’s influence in capturing Wirtz proved pivotal, and similar assertiveness may be needed to ensure Gakpo remains part of the Reds’ future.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this story carries an air of déjà vu — top clubs circling around top talent after a standout campaign. But there’s reason for optimism.

Firstly, Arne Slot has shown he can attract elite talent. Convincing Florian Wirtz to snub Bayern and commit to Liverpool was a power play that sent a clear message: Liverpool are back at Europe’s top table, and players want to be part of this new chapter.

Secondly, Gakpo has flourished under Slot. His form, despite injury issues, has been impressive. It’s hard to believe he’d walk away so soon after winning the Premier League, especially with the Champions League back on the horizon.

Financially, Liverpool are not desperate sellers. Yes, if Bayern offer a monster fee — perhaps upwards of £70 million — the club will consider it, as they would with any asset. But it would have to be on their terms. Gakpo is still under contract and entering his prime at 26.

Let’s not forget the emotional bond either. Gakpo has openly spoken about the club’s ambition and the togetherness in the squad. Unless he pushes for the move — and there’s no evidence yet he will — it’s likely Liverpool will fend off Bayern’s interest.

In short, fans should keep calm. Gakpo is valued, settled, and competing at the highest level. Slot has a vision, and Gakpo is very much part of it.
