Liverpool’s Midfield Anchor: Mac Allister’s Influence and the Drop-Off Without Him

When Liverpool took on PSG at Anfield, the margins were fine. Yet, as the game wore on, one key moment stood out—Alexis Mac Allister leaving the pitch. Speaking on the Media Matters podcast for Anfield Index, football journalist David Lynch highlighted just how much Liverpool lost control once the Argentine international was withdrawn.

Mac Allister’s Influence in Midfield

It’s no secret that Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season. His intelligence, composure, and ability to dictate play have made him the key figure in Arne Slot’s midfield. Lynch was quick to praise his impact against PSG, stating:

“I love Mac Allister to bits, love watching him. He’s the integral midfielder of the three, absolutely vital because he’s so good in everything he does.”

His influence wasn’t just about keeping the ball moving—it was about control. When Mac Allister was on the pitch, Liverpool were able to dictate the tempo, win second balls, and create chances. Lynch pointed out that he “created more chances than anybody else in the match, five in total, which shows you how good he is.”

In a high-stakes game, having a player with that level of vision and control is invaluable. But once Mac Allister was substituted, Liverpool struggled to keep a foothold in the match.

Liverpool Lost Their Grip on the Game

The difference in Liverpool’s midfield was stark once Mac Allister went off. Lynch highlighted how the drop-off in quality had a direct impact on the game’s outcome.

“Liverpool were much worse when he went off.”

While Liverpool still created chances, the overall rhythm of the team was disrupted. The ability to transition smoothly from defence to attack suffered, and PSG found it easier to dictate play.

“It was a big part of why Liverpool had more control in midfield compared to the first leg. When he went off, that control disappeared.”

This is a key concern moving forward—Liverpool need to ensure that when Mac Allister isn’t available, they don’t suffer such a sharp decline in midfield control.

Squad Depth Still an Issue in Midfield

While Liverpool overhauled their midfield last summer, Lynch made it clear that there is still work to do. Having one player who can dictate the tempo is not enough for a team aiming to compete at the highest level.

“If Liverpool can add one more midfielder of that level, someone the manager truly trusts, then that would be a real positive.”

It’s not about replacing Mac Allister, but about ensuring Liverpool have another player who can step in without the level dropping significantly.

What Next for Liverpool’s Midfield?

With the summer transfer window approaching, Liverpool’s recruitment team will be well aware of this issue. While Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s best signings in recent years, the lack of an alternative is a problem that needs to be addressed.

“Liverpool need to add real quality, not just quantity. If they can bring in one more midfielder of top-class ability, then they’ll be in a much stronger position.”

Against PSG, the difference was clear. With Mac Allister on the pitch, Liverpool looked composed and in control. Without him, that control faded, and so did Liverpool’s chances of progressing.

If Liverpool are to challenge on all fronts next season, finding a reliable midfield partner for Mac Allister should be a priority.
