Liverpool’s summer transfer window is anything but cautious. With Arne Slot fresh off a Premier League-winning debut season, the club has backed him with purpose, bringing in top-tier talent across multiple positions. One of the most eye-catching signings is Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported £69million. While fans remain fixated on a potential Alexander Isak move, respected journalist David Lynch made it clear, in conversation with Dave Davis for Anfield Index, that “Liverpool have been working on this deal since January and it is completely separate to their interest in Alexander Isak.”
That detail speaks volumes. It’s not a Plan B. It’s a calculated addition.
Liverpool believe they have captured one of Europe’s most promising forwards. According to data the club relies on heavily, “Only Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have shown more potential under the age of 23.” That is an extraordinary statement. For all the talk of overpaying for potential, it’s clear that Liverpool’s recruitment team, now operating under a highly collaborative structure, are convinced Ekitike isn’t just raw talent — he’s ready to contribute now.
There’s an understanding too that his ceiling is far from reached. “They’re also convinced that his finishing will continue to improve because he has generally been a level finisher throughout his career so far.” That measured view highlights the belief that Slot’s system and coaching staff can elevate the 22-year-old’s game.
This summer’s recruitment drive hasn’t followed the scattergun approach of previous regimes. There is cohesion behind the scenes, with every signing reflecting a clear tactical profile. Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez will bring explosive width, Florian Wirtz offers elite creativity and Mamardashvili strengthens the goalkeeping department.
Ekitike, in this context, is more than a striker. His intelligent movement, pace and link-up ability could allow Slot to unlock different attacking shapes — whether flanked by Mohamed Salah or operating in tandem with another forward like Isak, if the club succeeds in their pursuit.
There’s a growing sense of anticipation around Ekitike’s arrival, not just among fans but within the media close to the club. As David Lynch stated, “I’ve seen less of him than I’ve seen Wirtz over recent years, so I’m really excited to see him in action.” That excitement is shared by many, especially given Liverpool’s ability to nurture and maximise young talents.
Slot’s second season promises to be even more intriguing. With Ekitike now part of a refreshed attacking unit, expectations are high, and the confidence within the club suggests they believe they’ve made another masterstroke.
One thing is certain: this move doesn’t mark the end of Liverpool’s window, but it underlines their intent. The Reds are building for now and for the future.
