In a summer window already marked by intrigue and speculation, one name that has stirred attention is Real Madrid’s Rodrygo. With uncertainty looming over the future of Luis Diaz at Liverpool, many expected the Reds to identify a high-profile replacement — and Rodrygo’s name had consistently been pushed by the Spanish media. However, James Pearce of The Athletic has poured cold water on such talk, confirming that Liverpool are not considering the Brazilian forward as a replacement should Diaz depart.
This development is not only a major shift in the transfer narrative but also a clear signal from Liverpool’s recruitment team about how they intend to approach this transfer window. Pearce wrote on X:“Liverpool yet to receive an improved bid from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz. Player has trained normally so far this week in Hong Kong. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo currently not viewed as a possible replacement if Diaz does go. No talks. #LFC”
Rodrygo’s reported unhappiness at Madrid has added fuel to speculation surrounding his exit. His preference to play on the left would have seemingly made him a natural successor to Diaz, who continues to be strongly linked with Bayern Munich. Yet, the lack of talks between Liverpool and Madrid, as Pearce reveals, is decisive.
TEAMtalk recently noted Madrid would want upwards of €90million (£78m) plus add-ons for Rodrygo, which likely plays a significant role in Liverpool’s decision to steer clear. Although the Premier League champions have a clear need to prepare for Diaz’s possible departure, they appear unwilling to be dragged into an inflated bidding war.
According to Bild’s Christian Falk, Bayern Munich remain confident that Diaz will make the move to Bavaria this summer. He stated:“Bayern Munich are increasingly certain that they will sign Luis Diaz in the end… They’re determined to find a solution.”
Two previous bids have already been rejected, with the latest standing at €67.5m (£58.5m), and negotiations are ongoing. It’s worth noting that the Colombian winger is reportedly on significantly lower wages at Liverpool compared to what Bayern are offering — a four-year contract at €14m gross annually.
Falk added:“This is one of the reasons why he wants to join Bayern Munich, as he feels he would be better appreciated.”
It’s clear that Liverpool are keeping their cards close to their chest. While interest in Rodrygo has been ruled out, it does not mean they lack ambition or alternatives. The club have proven in recent years that they won’t be pressured into panic buys. With Arne Slot now preparing for his second season in charge, following a title-winning debut campaign, the club will be strategic in any squad alterations.
At present, Diaz continues to train normally and remains part of the pre-season tour. Whether Bayern’s improved offer finally matches Liverpool’s valuation remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Rodrygo will not be part of the solution.
From a Liverpool supporter’s point of view, this update is frustrating. The Rodrygo links, while speculative, offered a glimmer of excitement during a window that has felt stagnant in terms of incoming flair. Losing Luis Diaz, one of the few consistent wide threats at Anfield, and then finding out there are no talks for a top-level replacement like Rodrygo feels underwhelming.
Supporters will understand not being held to ransom by Madrid’s steep valuation, but questions remain about whether Liverpool have alternatives lined up. If Diaz leaves and there’s no clear contingency, it could harm our Premier League title defence before it even begins. Rodrygo is young, technically gifted, and has Champions League pedigree. Fans want ambition, not prudence disguised as strategy.
What’s even more concerning is the idea that Diaz might be tempted by a higher wage and perceived “appreciation” elsewhere. That’s something the club hierarchy needs to reflect on. Slot has brought a new energy and success, but if the squad depth isn’t maintained or improved, the momentum could slip.
We’ve been told Liverpool have “other targets” — now is the time to show it. If not Rodrygo, then who?
