Journalist gives transfer window update

According to a report from Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur are looking at recruits in a number of positions, including a new centre-back, left-back and a midfielder - whilst also "considering" the current goalkeeper situation.

Journalist gives an update on the January transfer window

In the report, it is suggested that there is an "understanding" within the club of the tough situation Ange is in, the impact of the tired players currently playing every three days, and how his high octane style of play is limited as a result.

Interestingly, Gold points out that Fabio Paratici was at the game against Wolves - just three days before the January transfer window opens. It is well documented that the former Spurs director of football still plays an unofficial role behind the scenes, and plays his part in the recruitment of new players.

Even the fans most cynical towards Ange will admit that there is a clear need for investment in January, and that the club will have failed him if they do not provide that. There is a lot of division within the fanbase towards the manager, but the attitude towards Daniel Levy and co feels more unanimous than it has been for a while.

Spurs ended the game yesterday with a left hand side of Sergio Reguilon and Timo Werner. Daniel Levy was there. If he saw that and thinks investment is not necessary, then he may be more shameless than all of us already thought. Does he even know football well enough to have clocked that? He probably sees them as two footballers in the same way if the left hand side was Alphonso Davies and Kylian Mbappe.

Still, if they are going to go in for a left-back, it will be interesting to see if Patrick Dorgu comes up again, with the club interested in the Denmark international at Lecce for a while now. At centre-back, they have been linked with Uzbekistan's Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens. Elsewhere, Milan Skriniar of PSG has also been mentioned regarding central defenders.

As for midfielders, it feels like there have been fewer names mentioned. Spurs have the option to sign USMNT midfielder Jonny Cardoso from Real Betis for around £25m - but it appears that is a clause that will be available in the summer, rather than this window. The club were recently linked to Quinten Timber from Feyenoord - so that could be one to keep an eye on.

Whilst recruitment is key in January - it is also important to be better than this time last winter, where the club brought in Radu Dragusin and Werner. With the current bare bones scenario, there will be an attitude of "anyone will do" and "bodies in is the most important thing", which is understandable - but two signings of the aforementioned quality will not do a lot to help turn the season around.

In 2022, we saw the club bring in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski. Admittedly the former has been more hit and miss, but in general that is much more of the January window that Spurs need. That window was during Paratici's official time at the club.

Every transfer window is well documented and covered, but this one feels bigger than most in recent years. Let's see.
