Sunderland are preparing for discussions with Liverpool over the possibility of bringing Jayden Danns back to the Stadium of Light on loan next season. The 19-year-old striker, who initially joined the Black Cats in February on a season-long loan, returned to Anfield without making a single appearance due to a back issue discovered during his medical.
Despite the setback, Sunderland’s handling of the situation – praised by Liverpool officials – has opened the door to renewed cooperation. According to Scott Wilson of the Sunderland Echo, the mutual respect between the clubs could be a decisive factor in future negotiations.
When Danns signed in the final hours of the winter transfer window, there was optimism he could contribute during Sunderland’s push for promotion. However, a scan conducted at the Academy of Light flagged a back problem that required careful management.
The forward returned to Merseyside for assessment, and Liverpool’s medical staff recommended a lengthy period of rest, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign. Still, he remained engaged – making multiple visits to Sunderland to watch matches and holding private conversations with head coach Régis Le Bris as the club surged to Premier League promotion through the play-offs.

These interactions have reportedly fostered a strong relationship between player and manager – a factor that may encourage both clubs to revisit the loan agreement.
Danns is expected to be included in Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia, where new manager Arne Slot will assess the club’s emerging talent. The tour opens with a fixture against AC Milan in Hong Kong in late July, and it’s understood that decisions on the futures of several young players, including Danns, will be made thereafter.
Should the teenager be deemed surplus to first-team requirements, Liverpool would consider loaning him out again – with a Premier League loan particularly attractive. Sunderland, now back in the top flight, are well positioned to offer him competitive minutes and a platform for development.
Though raw, Danns has already tasted senior football. He’s made ten appearances for Liverpool, scoring in the FA Cup, playing in the Champions League, and featuring in their victorious 2024 Carabao Cup campaign.
Sunderland, for their part, see Danns as a useful squad player rather than a week-in, week-out starter. With Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor likely to lead the line under Le Bris, Danns would provide depth and youthful energy – an ideal supplementary option in a demanding Premier League schedule.
Importantly, a second loan spell would be a cost-effective move, freeing up transfer funds for reinforcements in other key areas. The striker’s continued interest in the club, combined with Sunderland’s considered approach to his injury, puts them in a favourable position.
If Slot decides a loan is the best route for Danns’ development, Sunderland will be waiting – offering top-flight football, a familiar environment, and a manager who already sees value in the player’s potential.
