Liverpool will clash heads with Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night, hoping to pick up all three points on matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League campaign. The Reds will be heading into the contest on the back of a thumping 5-0 win against Watford in the Premier League, whereas the hosts recorded a 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona on October 3.

Jurgen Klopp will probably opt for the 4-3-3 formation with a couple of tweaks from the last game. Diogo Jota might get the nod over Roberto Firmino in attack, whereas Alisson Becker looks likely to make his way back into the starting eleven.

Defence

Alisson Becker will return to operate in between the sticks for the upcoming clash. The Brazilian shot-stopper will be hoping to put up a strong performance and secure a clean sheet on Wednesday.

Joe Gomez will replace Joel Matip to form the centre-half partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s backline.

Andrew Robertson is a guaranteed starter at the left wing-back position, whereas Trent Alexander-Arnold will fill in on the other flank as the right wing-back. The full-backs will be expected to stretch their side’s attack in the opposition half.

Midfield

Fabinho might start in the holding midfield position and could be assigned with more of a defensive role to shield the away side’s back-four.

Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita will slot into the central midfield roles. The duo would be determined to set up some clear cut goal scoring chances for the front men.

Harvey Elliott and Thiago Alcantara remain sidelined with injuries.

Attack

Takumi Minamino and Mohamed Salah will take up the wide positions, playing on the left and right-wing respectively.

Diogo Jota, who was on the bench against Watford on Saturday, will lead the line for Liverpool in midweek. The Portugal international will be hoping to get his name on the scoresheet when he faces off against the Atletico Madrid defence that has conceded just two goals in their last three matches across all competitions.
