Liverpool will play hosts to Arsenal at Anfield on Thursday night as they try to win and book a place in the next round of the EFL Cup. The Reds managed to beat the Gunners by a convincing 3-1 scoreline earlier this week. However, both sides are expected to make a lot of changes as they will rest a lot of their first-team stars in midweek.

Jurgen Klopp will probably set his side up in a 4-3-3 formation with Diogo Jota expected to get a start while Harvey Elliott looks to make an impact off the bench.

Defence

Adrian could get a start in between the sticks for the Reds despite shipping in two goals versus Lincoln City in his last outing. Joe Gomez might feature alongside Sepp van den Berg at the centre of the Liverpool backline as they focus on limiting the opposition’s chances in front of goal.

Konstantinos Tsimikas could get the nod to operate at left-back while Neco Williams looks to impress on the other side as the right-back. Klopp will ask both of them to maintain a high line and provide adequate support to the front players from the wide areas.

Virgil Van Dijk will be rested on the bench for this game versus Mikel Arteta’s men in midweek.

Midfield

The Liverpool midfield will be comprised of Curtis Jones, Marko Grujic and James Milner as they hope to dominate the midfield battle and orchestrate some meaningful opportunities to score in the attacking third. Jones managed to bag a brace versus Lincoln in his last outing, which will keep him on high spirits heading into this cup clash at home.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho will be available for selection on the Reds bench as they await their chance to feature in this game if needed.

Attack

Both Divock Origi and Diogo Jota will function as the wide players while Takumi Minamino leads the charge for the Merseyside outfit down the middle. All three attackers have been amongst the goals in recent matches, so they will fancy their chances of banging in a few goals when they face off against Arsenal in midweek.

Harvey Elliott will have to be content with a spot on the bench but could come on as an impact substitute in the second 45 minutes if required.
