Joshua Uche finds new home with the Eagles after confusing stint with Chiefs

Joshua Uche didn't exactly enjoy the kind of season that leads to great rewards on the open market. However, that's exactly why the Philadelphia Eagles are excited that they might have a nice buy-low opportunity in free agency after signing Uche in free agency.

According to NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the Eagles have signed Uche to a one-year deal.

Josh Uche has left the Chiefs for the Eagles in free agency

Uche, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Michigan, spent the first five seasons of his career with the New England Patriots. Uche profiled as a speed rusher off the edge with a nice pro trajectory, peaking with 11.5 sacks in his third NFL season in 2022. However, his production was inconsistent overall and fell sharply after that third campaign.

In 2024, Uche returned to the Pats on a team-friendly deal but saw his playing time fall sharply and the Kansas City Chiefs pounced on the opportunity to bolster their pass rush. The Chiefs dealt a future sixth-round pick (2026) for Uche before the league's trade deadline. Unfortunately, Uche was a healthy scratch for most games and a clear bad fit in K.C.

Uche certainly has appeal as one of the quicker guys off the edge, but he's limited as a run defender and the market was bound to be wary of his uneven production. Sitting on the sidelines for a Chiefs' defense that needed more pass rushers was also not going to help Uche's free agent stock.

The Chiefs were clearly not going to bring back Uche after a half season in 2024, but perhaps he'll find a change of scenery to Philadelphia to be the spark he needs in 2025.
