Bayern Munich standout Joshua Kimmich has pleaded with the club to get a deal for a new right-back over the line.
Coach Hansi Flick has made no secret of the fact that he is desperate for the German champions to strengthen in that area, with Benjamin Pavard the only senior ‘right-back’ at the club just now.
That, of course, is not including Kimmich himself, who may have selfish reasons for wanting the move – as it keeps him in his favoured midfield position.
He was forced back into defence for the latter stages of the Champions League but will be relieved that a move for Ajax’s Sergiño Dest appears to be drawing closer.
“Our team is very strong. Nevertheless, I’m of the opinion that we still have to improve,” the Germany international told Süddeutsche Zeitung.
“That includes in personnel. Of course, the coach must decide what positions are needed but right now, we only have one right-back.
“Last season, we pulled it off because the interruptions brought about unexpected breaks.
“It felt like we had four pre-seasons and we could continue recharging our batteries again and again.
“But we have a lot of games this year so it will be difficult.”
Dest is expected to make the move to Bavaria this week, with Bayern quickly reinvesting the money from the sale of Thiago to Liverpool.
