The former Germany international has been impressed by the ‘intelligent’ right-back’s attitude and believes he will lead the club in the future.
Kimmich spoke of the need for Bayern to improve following Friday’s defeat by Hertha Berlin and the 23-year-old isn’t afraid to encourage even the most experienced players in the team.
Sammer praised the defender and told Eurosport: “Joshua Kimmich is a mentality player, he will sooner or later be the captain, the leader of Bayern and the national team”
“He’s an intelligent, strong player” he added. “Kimmich brings with him strong character, you have to have that ambition in you, you always have to strive for the highest.”
After the game, Kimmich said: “It’s not like I said I want to be a leader now, but I know you can not win games on your own, so I try to get the others involved with my own performance.
“I think everyone on the field should be on par with everyone, so do not be afraid to say something to Thomas Müller or Jerome Boateng. That’s important to our game.”
