Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich has called on fellow players to follow the lead of Bundesliga players who took a stand against racism last weekend.
Borussia Dortmund duo Jadon Sancho and Achraf Hakimi were joined by Weston McKennie of Schalke and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram in protesting against the murder of George Floyd in the USA at the hands of a police officer.
Kimmich is aware that as a top level footballer, he is in a powerful position and is determined he use it, along with his colleagues.
“As a football player, you have a big power in this world,” the Germany international acknowledged.
“My opinion is that we should feel that responsibility and say something like Sancho did.
“It is good that it isn’t just one player. Maybe it is also an option to say something as a team.
“Football can act like a role model and in this game, as in life, it isn’t possible to accept something like racism.
“We are one world, one club, one team and it doesn’t matter if you are black or white.
“As players, like Sancho, we have a lot of power to reach people and say something and it gives us a chance to make a statement.”
The versatile midfielder also admitted there have been discussions in the dressing room about putting on a show of solidarity.
“We have spoken about it as a team and maybe there is something we can do,” he added.
“Maybe we have to do something because we can’t allow something like this to have a place.”
