Bayern Munich looked like the nine-time reigning Bundesliga champions on Friday evening, defeating Greuther Fürth 3-1 on the road despite going down to 10 men in the 48th minute.
Benjamin Pavard was sent off with the Bavarians up 2-0 but the visitors never wavered, asserting their dominance by scoring a third in the 68th minute before Rangers loanee Cedric Itten scored a consolation just before full-time.
After the match, Joshua Kimmich hailed his side’s character as Bayern scored at least three goals for the eighth consecutive match.
“It wasn’t a brilliant performance, but we were always in control of the game. Even when we were a man down, we had everything under control.
“We made a few too many mistakes, especially towards the end of the first half. That’s how we kept inviting pressure from Fürth. But all in all, we deserved to win.
“The character of the team is superb. We have players who are hungry and want to improve.
“We want to win trophies and matches, even if we’re the clear favourites going into the game.
“At the moment we’re in a good place, but we haven’t played all our games with this level of conviction thus far.”
Julian Nagelsmann also echoed Kimmich, praising both his side and Fürth for their strong play despite the circumstances.
“In the end, it’s important to have won against a newly-promoted side and to have done so in a game where we finished with ten men. We started well.
“After the goal, Fürth lost their sense of respect for us and played very well. We’re happy about the three points, Fürth asked a lot of us.
“We would have liked to have kept a clean sheet, but we stayed ahead throughout. So, all’s well.”
Bayern are on 16 points through six games and will now get ready for Wednesday’s Champions League duel with Dynamo Kyiv.
