Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff explains officials were biased towards his players in the 2-0 loss against the LA Galaxy, labeling the referee as "extremely poor."

Wolff voiced his frustrations after the match, claiming that the two goal-scorers received star treatment from the officials whereas his players didn’t: “Chicharito, Riqui, these are good players. They got protected a lot tonight. They really did,” he said.

“I think a lot of Chris Penso, I think he’s the best in the league. I thought it was tough to watch tonight. … Refereeing is very, very challenging, but these don’t seem like real hard ones. I thought he was poor, extremely poor on the night," added Wolff.

Wolff then went on to mention one of their star players, Sebastian Driussi, did not receive the same treatment and respect from the officials.

“We have a few good players out there on the team tonight and I thought it was a real lack of respect for what is one of the best players in the league. Obviously not his best year, but some of the decision-making and the leadership on the field from the referees I thought was tough to stomach.”

The Western Conference team has struggled to find any sort of consistency this season, as their poor form forces a drop to 11th place on the table. This is a stark contrast to last season for Austin, after finishing second in the West behind eventual MLS Cup champions LAFC.

But goals have been hard to come by. The team has scored just six goals in eight matches this season, going on 355 minutes without scoring now. Things may have hit a new low when the Verde and Black handed the LA Galaxy their first win of the season in a 2-0 defeat Saturday night, as second-half goals by Chicharito and Puig sealed the three points for the Galaxy.

While Wolff was visibly disappointed with the decisions by the referees, he did state that they have a difficult job at hand. Now, he must depend on Driussi and Designated Players Emiliano Rigoni and Alexander Ring to lead their side back up the table in the coming games.
