Portsmouth are said to be one of a couple of Football League clubs that are weighing up a loan move for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

The teenager spent the entirety of last season on loan at Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League Two and played a massive role in helping the Robins to secure promotion as they lifted the league title.

Now it appears that there is interest in the shot stopper’s services, with the report going on to state that both Portsmouth and Lincoln City are keen to bring the 19-year-old on loan.

With that in mind, we have decided to weigh up the transfer speculation involving Griffiths and Portsmouth.

Is it a good potential move?

This would definitely be another step in the right direction for the youngster as it would allow him to play at a higher level than he has previously in his career.

Portsmouth are looking to play good football out from the back via the use of keeping possession for long spells and this should help to enhance the West Brom keeper’s distribution with his feet.

In addition to this, Danny Cowley has a brilliant track record of getting the best out of young players from his time at Lincoln City and it is clear that he has all the attributes to enhance Griffiths in many ways.

A move to League One would be a no brainer for the teenager.

Would he start?

There is a very big chance that Griffiths would indeed start if he did make the move to Fratton Park as Craig MacGillivray appears set to depart the South Coast clubs amidst interest in his services from Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic.

The only other first team keeper that the club has on it’s books is Alex Bass, but he has been far from convincing between the sticks thus far.

Therefore it appears likely that the Baggies youngster could indeed slot in as first choice for the League One side if he makes the move there this summer.

What does he offer?

Griffiths is a player who has excellent reflexes, which allows him to get down quickly to low shots from close range, a trait which he showed to great effect at Cheltenham.

He now also has experience of playing in the Football League under his belt, so he is no stranger to coming up against physical opposition.

In fact, he only conceded 37 goals in the league last term and kept an even more impressive 21 clean sheets on the way to the title, underlining his presence as a key performer.

If he can repeat those levels with Pompey, the club will have one hell of a keeper on their hands next term.
