José Mourinho has said Toby Alderweireld will not be sidelined for as long as he first feared.
The defender pulled up in Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat of Manchester City at the weekend and Mourinho was initially very pessimistic on how long the defender would be out.
However, scans on the injury have provided Spurs with a boost.
“Toby has a muscular injury but not as big as we initially thought,” Mourinho told reporters on Wednesday.
“He will have his time to be out but not like a month, which was immediately what we thought. I’d say between two and four weeks.”
The Belgian is now likely to miss Premier League fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal.
That means an opportunity for summer signing Joe Rodon. The Welsh centre-back has featured twice in the Premier League for Spurs but is yet to start a game.
His availability puts him ahead of Japhet Tanganga for the time being, with the Spurs academy graduate lacking match fitness.
