Despite failing to beat AC Milan in their Serie A clash today, AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho said he is proud of his team’s display against the reigning champions.

The 60-year-old watched his side give up a lead in the game’s dying moments. His squad has been deleted by injuries and suspensions, but they kept Milan quiet.

Roma were without Chris Smalling, Diego Llorente, Gini Wijnaldum, Rick Karsdorp and Paulo Dybala. They lost Marash Kumbulla and Andrea Belotti to knocks by half-time today.

The game was uneventful for most of the 90 minutes, but Tammy Abraham gave Giallorossi the lead late in the game.

Abraham took a Zeki Celik pass before angling a shot beyond Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The Englishman probably thought he had scored the winner, but the Rossoneri responded.

Roma failed to clear a long ball from Maignan. The ball fell to Rafael Leao, who lofted a cross for Alexis Saelemaekers to finish at the back post.

Mourinho said he looked at the game as two dropped points and not one point gained. However, he said he was proud of the performance.

After the game, Mourinho told DAZN (via Football Italia): “If we only talk about the performance, then I say the result is unfair on us.

“Only we, only we, with all that we built as a team, only we can play against Milan the way we did with all the difficulties that we are in.

“We are not a rich team – we don’t have a big squad. Every time we lose a player it is a big problem and we lost several today.

“Despite all these difficulties, to fight so hard against Milan for an achievement of finishing fourth that would be simply incredible – only we can do that.

“I am sad, obviously, as we had three points in our hands, but I am more proud than I am sad.”

When quizzed about the many injuries and suspensions, Mourinho made light of the situation.

He joked about calling up a defender from Roma’s women’s team that just won the Scudetto.

Roma visit AC Monza in midweek before hosting Inter Milan next weekend.
