Jose Mourinho has worked with a host of world-class footballers during his illustrious managerial career.

The legendary Portuguese tactician, who turns 60 today, ranks one player above the rest in terms of professionalism – and it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tottenham, Mourinho said to Christian Eriksen when asked about Frank Lampard: “Frank? Professional as a player… the best I’ve ever seen.”

Mourinho and Lampard enjoyed huge success together during their time at Chelsea, including two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

Lampard also finished as runner-up for both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year awards in 2005.

The former Premier League icon was still a Chelsea player when Mourinho made an emotional return to Stamford Bridge in 2013, six years after leaving by the club by mutual consent, but was approaching the end of his career by this point.

Lampard was released by Chelsea at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, ending his 13-year association with the west London outfit.

He went on to join Major League Soccer side New York City FC on a two-year deal but spent the first six months on loan at Manchester City.

The day Lampard scored for Man City vs Chelsea

Just one month into his City loan spell and Lampard came off the bench to score the equaliser against his beloved Chelsea during a Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Entering the fray as a second-half substitute, Lampard cancelled out Andre Schurrle’s opener with a close-range finish and didn’t know how to react.

This was one goal that he was never going to celebrate.

What did Frank Lampard say after scoring against Chelsea?

Lampard spoke to Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves after the final whistle, alongside Man of the Match James Milner, and the mixed feelings he was experiencing at the time are clear for everyone to see.

“It’s a really difficult one. I’d be unprofessional if I didn’t come on and do my job,” Lampard said. “So I tried to get in the box, it’s a great ball from Millie. It’s a tough one for me, I had 13 amazing years with Chelsea fans, so I’m mixed with it.

“I’m obviously pleased with the team I play for got a draw.”

He added: “I’m really stuck in the middle here.”

What did Mourinho say after Lampard scored for City v Chelsea?

Mourinho was also interviewed live on Sky Sports after Lampard denied his side two points.

Asked what he made of Lampard scoring the goal, Mourinho told Shreeves: “He’s a Man City player. I don’t believe in these histories of passion, heart. I don’t believe in this, maybe I’m too pragmatic in football.

“When he decided to come to Man City, a direct competitor of Chelsea, love stories are obviously over.

“He did his job as the super professional that he is and he did well.”

Deep down, you can tell Mourinho felt a little hurt to be on the receiving end of a Lampard equaliser, and that Lampard felt more than a little awkward and embarrassed to have scored against the club of his heart.
