José Luis Gayà, visibly down, spoke to the media before boarding a plane to return to Spain after picking up an injury in Qatar.

“I’m trying to comprehend the situation. It is difficult. It’s very hard. I’m sad but proud to have fought all these years to be able to be here. It wasn’t to be in the end. This has been decided and I’m sure Luis Enrique is doing it for the good of the team, as he said,” he told Cadena SER in words picked up by AS.

On a live Twitch stream on Friday, Luis Enrique said: “It has been the worst day for having to tell Gayà that he has to leave the training camp due to an injury that is not too serious but with the immediacy of the games it means taking a lot of risks.

“I want to wish them all the best from the bottom of my heart, they are a spectacular group of people. They have created an atmosphere that I have never experienced in the national team or in any other team. I have a feeling they’re going to have a great World Cup and I’m going to cheer them on from home. I wish them all the best,” concluded Gayà.
