As previously reported by Cope, the club offered the Spain international a contract renewal for the next five seasons as well as the highest salary at the club. That was in November and, since then, many meetings have taken place.

Then came the Copa del Rey final and everything was postponed until, at the end of the season, with Gennaro Gattuso in charge, the player’s agents and the club took up the matter again. They moved forward with the same idea, to reach an agreement on a new deal.

The club’s intention is to announce the contract renewal in the first half of October. The 27-year-old’s current deal runs until 30 June 2023.
