Spanish defender José Enrique played for two clubs during a successful spell in England.
He first joined Newcastle, where he spent four years and made over 100 league appearances, before joining Liverpool, where he spent five years, which were interrupted by injury.
Just don’t ask him to choose between the two – as he opened up on his love for both.
“I’m tired of people always asking me ‘why do you support Liverpool and not Newcastle?’,” the 34-year-old, who is now retired having encountered health issues, told Ladbrokes.
“So I want to reply to that now because it isn’t something I usually do.
“For me, Liverpool was the big move but I can’t compare the two teams.
“I love Newcastle. They treated me so well. I was so happy there and I did so well and the fans were always amazing.
“I have nothing bad to say about the club. Newcastle will always have a place in my heart.”
However, with all of that said, the former Villarreal man revealed why it is Liverpool who ultimately edge it in his affections.
“Liverpool was everything for me. I had the best and worst times of my life there,” he added.
“I had my injuries there but I met my partner there. Then at the worst moment of my life with my tumour, they were the first ones to get in touch.
“Once a red, always a red.”
