Jorge Sánchez struck late to snatch a crucial win for América over Atlas at the Estadio Azteca.

The first half was a cagey affair, with the best chance to score falling to América on the stroke of half time.

Federico Viñas burst through on goal only to see his effort brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Camilo Vargas, and Henry Martín’s header from the rebound went straight into the grateful grasp of the Atlas goalkeeper.

Viñas had another excellent opportunity in the 65th minute.

After brilliantly pressing the Atlas defence into coughing up possession, the Uruguayan striker sent his shot into the side-netting.

The Azulcrema were finally able to break the visitors’ stubborn resistance two minutes from time.

Vargas punched a corner clear only for the ball to fall to Leo Suárez, whose beautiful cross to the far post was met perfectly by the head of right-back Sánchez.

The victory sees Las Águilas move up to second in the table, albeit with fellow top-four contenders Pumas and Cruz Azul yet to play this weekend.
