Talking to Super Deportiva Radio, Argentine coach Jorge Almirón talked about the possibility of being the albiceleste manager.
While finishing pre-season at the helm of Colombian club Atlético Nacional, Almirón spoke to media about the rumours that name him as a candidate to replace Jorge Sampaoli on the Argentina bench.
“It’s speculation, there is nothing definitive. I don’t take it seriously,” the former Lanús manager explained. There are just four days before the start of the Liga Águila in Colombia when Nacional host Deportes Tolima on Wednesday night.
The former Argentine midfielder played most of his club career in Mexico. He started coaching with smaller clubs in Mexico before returning to his homeland to head Defensa y Justicia, Independiente, and most recently Lanús.
Naturally, Almirón appreciated that his name could be considered for a position so important in South American football. “It is a privilege that my name appears. Any manager would like to have this chance, but this is nothing concrete and I don’t take it with gravity.”
There are important names above him that have been linked to the Argentina job, such as Marcelo Gallardo, Diego Simeone, and Mauricio Pochettino. “I think that there are other coaches who have shown their pedigree working in Europe. There are many good managers. I think they beyond a name, Argentine football must have a clear vision and must sustain it beyond match results because every process needs time.”
Almirón is under contract with Atlético Nacional through December 2019. While he may be an outside candidate for the Argentina job, his Colombian club can expect interest in his services. If other club sides or national teams come calling before his contract expires, Nacional may cash in by accepting the payment of a termination fee.
