Jordi Cruyff is committed to joining Barcelona under Joan Laporta

In March of this year, Joan Laporta became the new incumbent president of Barcelona. Ever since then, he has been aiming to create an environment of total reformation in the upper echelons of the club. His aim is to take the crumbs and shambles left behind by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his cronies and rebuild the club into one of the world’s best again.

Laporta has always been a loyal Cruyffista, and in fact, Johan Cruyff was even honorary president in his last tenure from 2003 to 2010. Reports have been coming in ever since the 58-year-old returned to office in Catalonia about Johan Cruyff’s son, Jordi Cruyff, joining his board at Barça.

Now, the ever-reliable Sique Rodriguez reports that Cruyff is said to join Laporta after December when his contract with Chinese Super League club Shenzhen FC ends.

The report details that he has offered his commitment to Laporta and his project at Barça. However, there is currently neither a date nor a role defined if and when he is to join Barça’s new board. Rumours have suggested that he is to take up a role similar to that of Ramon Planes as a technical secretary.

It is more than likely that Cruyff will help in overseeing Barça’s sporting project, procurement of talent, promotion of youth, and the structural setup of the first team dynamics.

Cruyff’s contract ends in December of this year with Shenzhen, meaning he may either return after his contract is over, or there is a chance that he will terminate his contract to return sooner. Additionally, he will be taking a pay cut in joning the Blaugranas, as they will be unable to offer Cruyff the same wages that he earns at the Chinese club.

The main details of his role, date, and wages in Laporta’s board remain to be seen, but it is almost a matter of when, not if, Jordi Cruyff will return to the Camp Nou. A return to Cruyffism is welcome news for most Culés; a philosophy which prioritises total football, La Masia graduates, and a return to the club roots which make BarçaMés que un club”.
